Abstract

LANGUAGE NOTE | Document text in Chinese; abstract also in English.

It is generally believed that Yin Shi in Da Gao 大誥is an abbreviation of the titles Zuoce Yin 作册尹 and Neishi Yin 内史尹. However, this paper argues that Yin is the family name of Shi Yi 史佚, who was one of the Zuoce Yi 作册逸 dated back to the beginning of the Western Zhou Dynasty. Shi Yi owned his fief at the place of Yin, which became his family name. It was a hereditary right that the descendants of Shi Yi being the chief of court recorders, who had managed to keep this tradition after the capital was moved eastward to Luo Yang.
