Yu Jiaxi’s (1884-1955) comprehensive views and insights in his General Structure of Ancient Documents, a monograph first published in 1940, have been drawing more and more attention with the recent excavation of lost texts preserved in bamboo strips, silk inscriptions and ancient books. Although Yu did not see this large volume of material, he purposely expressed his opposition to the then-prevalent skepticism toward the authenticity of ancient books. While his theory has made an undeniable contribution to today’s scholarship, some of his views require cautious re-examination.
