Lau Pak-tun (1887-1963),a native of Guang Dong, was born and brought up in Canton. On the eve of the 1911 Revolution, he moved with his family to Hong Kong where he joined the staff of the Secretariat for Chinese Affairs where he remained until he took early retirement as a result of ill health.
From his early twenties he began the writing of ci poetry and remained devoted to this genre throughout his life. His initial volume of ci entitled Xin ying ci(心影詞)(1920), was followed by various collections, culminating in his Cang Hai Lou ci (滄海樓詞), published in 1953. This series of publications established firmly his reputation as one of the most distinguished writers of this genre. In 1967, a new edition of the Cang Hai Lou ci was brought out which gathers in the earlier and later collections. Unfortunately, the ci are not arranged in strict chronological order and offers serious obstacles to admirers of his ci. In this article, the author makes extensive use of material available in the writings of Lau’s contemporaries and associates and succeeds in a much closer dating of his work. It is not only a contribution of great value to students of Lau Pak-tun’s ci but also to historians of Chinese literature in modem times.
