《楞伽經》是中期大乘佛典之一,對中國佛敎尤其是禪宗影響很大,但至唐代禪宗六祖惠能以後,此經的地位卻漸有下降。一直到北宋的蘇軾,才重新強調《楞伽經》的重要作用。蘇軾之所以推重《楞伽經》,在禪學上,是對當時流行的看話禪和文字禪進行批判;在詩學上,是對江西詩派過於強調學古表示不滿;在人生觀上,與他本人的隨緣任運的思想相契合;在創作上,加強了其作品的深度並豐富了其表現手法。

Lankãvatãra-sutra is one of the Mahãyãna sutra in the period of mid-term Buddhism development which gave more influnce to the Buddhism especially to Zen in China. But it did not keep high position after Hui Neng, the sixth generation leader of Zen in Tang Dynasty, until Su Shi pointed out its important role in Northern Song Dynasty. Su Shi paid attention to the book because of following reasons: first, he criticized the Word Read Zen at that time; second, he was not satisfied with Jiangxi Poetry School for its unduely stressing on past in poetic; third, he was able to adapt himself to different circumstances in all his life especially when he came up against big difficulties; fourth, he strengthened his works in depth and enriched his works in technique of expression by the book of classics.
