An in-depth analysis of the novel Fu Sang by Yan Ge Ling is presented in this paper. The story took place in the San Francisco Chinatown during the 19th and the 20th centuries. On the surface, Fu Sang is a simple love story between a Chinese prostitute and an American teenage boy during the dark period of early Chinese immigration in North America. Yet, through her lyrical depiction of a cliche love story, Yan Ge Ling is able to challenge our traditional views on the stark differences between Oriental and Western cultures. Fu Sang, the main female character in the novel, was a Chinese prostitute, a despicable profession in an already repressed Chinese immigrant community. However, her low social status had not prevented her from fulfilling her role within the society. Her relationship with her American lover was not one of salvation but a reversed spiritual enlightenment of the strong by the weak.
