講述“中國詩的現代行程”是一樁不可能的任務。大約一百年前，自從中國人試圖用詩歌來表述自己的現代經驗，就陷入了由傳統/現代、横的移植/縱的繼承、個人/社會、文言/白話、自由/格律等等多重的二元對立之泥沼，（近年又加上了知識分子/民間、上半身/下半身等等更生動的範疇），殺聲如雷義旗蔽天，人困馬乏舉步維艱。這是一個“燃燒的迷津”（朱大可語），火光熊熊，烽煙四起，卻既没有路綫圖，也没有時間表。依九葉老詩人鄭敏的説法：(撮要取自內文首段)
