The stone inscription in Sung dynasty is such a notable cultural phenomenon that it constitutes an integrate part of the politics and calligraphy at that time. The stone inscribers, who played an important role in this cultural context, formed a group of people that needs special attention. Although some of them were from the countryside and some of them served at a government office, they had been both ignored for a long time. Based on the historical texts and the excavated stone inscriptions, this paper makes an investigation on the inscribers, their office, identity and their inscriptions.
