This essay argues that some modem regional plays on the thematic circle of The Thorn Hairpin (Jingchai ji) originated from rural plays before the Jiajing reign-period (1521-1566) of the Ming dynasty, and were therefore unrelated to the Capital edition that was popular among the upper social class. This is based on analyses of the characteristics of various plays, as well as their inherited relationships. These analyses mainly rely on a comparison among the old editions of Thorn Hairpin, revised editions, and the Min (Fukien), Capital, Hui (Anhui), Yiyang-tune and modern high-pitch tune editions.
