LANGUAGE NOTE | Document text in Chinese; abstract also in English.
Most of the qin music writings generated in the Tang dynasty (618-907) were not handed down to our time in their original form, but only indirectly in the form of quotations. It is difficult to assemble an exact picture of what remains as well as what there was. With previous scholarship having spent little or no effort in the area of reconstructing such texts, our picture of the morphology of the early qin music remains vague indeed. Therefore, to address this lacuna in the current state of research, the paper - as a case study - systematically traces and collects all the qin music writings of a ninth-century musician: Chen Kangshi. In particular, the paper accumulates the bibliographical data of Chen’s early qin writings, both practical and theoretical; reconstructs the lost works by way of collecting remnants through the complete, hitherto uncharted textual corpus; and retraces the history of each work, and its transmission.
