Abstract

LANGUAGE NOTE | Document text in Chinese; abstract also in English.

This essay begins with a discussion of some pictures and poems on A Dream of the Red Chamber by Gai Qi (1773-1828) dating from the Jiaqing and Daoguang years (1796-1850), and explores the formation, evolution, and transformation of the saloons of the “talented women from the boudoir” (Guiyan) and “talented ones of the state” (Bangyan), which were based in Shanghai City. It focuses on three research sub-topics. The first is an investigation of the combination of two gardens and Shanghai Redology. It discusses how the paintings of the characters in A Dream of the Red Chamber by Gai Qi were influenced by the atmosphere formed by the books, paintings, picture books, and engravings published by Gu Ni Garden and Wu Garden of Shanghai, as well as the atmosphere shaped by the literary and art community. The second focus is on the critical presentations of portraits of talented men and talented ladies, their social networks, and their literary and art works, in order to explore the rich meanings in the picture of the humanistic geography of the Shanghai art and literary scene. In particular, we centered on Guiyan and Bangyan portraits and artworks to examine their evolutions. The third sub-topic concerns the political changes in Shanghai and the inheritance and creation of talented men in the late Qing Dynasty. This section focuses on the talented men of the Tongzhi and Guangxu eras (1861-1908) including Wang Tao (1828-1879), Zou Tao (1850-1931), Han Bangqing (1856-1894), and others, who were influenced and inspired by the above literary and art movement and devoted themselves to the compilation and creation of local gazetteers, romantic narratives, domestic novels, and lyrics by boudoir talented ladies. It further analyzes the characteristics of their creative consciousness, its transformative process, development, and impacts.
