Abstract

LANGUAGE NOTE | Document text in Chinese; abstract also in English.

With the growing importance of environmental conservation and animal rights around the world, Hong Kong writers have louder voices concerning animal welfare. Contemporary Hong Kong Writers such as Cheung Yuen-man, Ho Lok, Hon Lai-chu, Chiang Hiu-mei, and Wong Yi care not only about the living conditions of human beings in the city but also the different animals living around humans. Their fiction describes the interaction and relationship between humans and animals. This article focuses on the writing about animals by contemporary Hong Kong writers, in light of Will Kymlicka and Sue Donaldson’s theory of animal rights, analyzing how they imagine the relationship between humans and domesticated animals, liminal animals, and wild animals. It presents the abovementioned writers’ view on human and animal bonding, and further discusses their reflections on animal rights. Finally, it examines how contemporary Hong Kong writers imagine a new relationship that is not anthropocentric through writing about animals, enriching the territory of contemporary Hong Kong literature.
