談到吴宓（1894-1978）與《學衡》，在其對手新文化派佔據上風的主流敘事中，其守舊派的標簽可以説是非常明顯。但在“思想感情之衝突，古今新舊之混淆，較他國他時均爲甚”的二十世紀上半葉，孰爲新，孰爲舊，卻是一個十 分弔詭的問題。周明之在研究清遺老時，就曾開門見山地指出了梁濟、王國維、羅振玉與鄭孝胥四人都曾是“新思想的先鋒”。这让人聯想到哲學家吕柏（Hermann Lübbe）所説的“‘當下’這個時態不斷地萎縮得越來越短暫”，於是乎“當下”的經驗在急劇加速、瞬息萬變的時間場中變得愈發“漫漶不清”。(撮要取自內文首段)
