Aims and Scope

Since its start as the Journal of the NUS Teaching Academy (JNUSTA) in 2011, the Asian Journal of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (AJSoTL) has been committed to advancing the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) in post-secondary education. It aims to cultivate a global network of academics and educators dedicated to exploring current practices and future trends in higher education. It aspires to serve as a platform for educators across disciplines to showcase pedagogical innovations, to present original research on teaching, assessment, and methodologies, and to discuss the teaching of essential skills that define a competent university graduate in today’s global economy (e.g., critical thinking, communication skills, ethical considerations, and professionalism).

The journal values its location in Asia and aims to develop Asian perspectives on SoTL. Consequently, AJSoTL seeks to promote SoTL in and beyond classrooms located in Asia so as to develop practice in the service of improved student learning outcomes in the varied contexts in Asia. We also welcome critical reflections on SoTL itself, the SoTL practice in Asia, and the meaning of “Asia(n)”.

The term “Asia(n)” does not mean to essentialise; rather, the journal seeks to encourage scholarly dialogue and inquiry cognisant of teaching and learning challenges and opportunities that may be present in Asia and elsewhere.  Comparative work on pedagogical practices in Asian and non-Asian contexts is therefore welcome. Contributions are also welcome to problematise and query notions of “Asia,” “Asian practices”, and “Asian-ness,” in particular the degree to which the “centre” and the “margin” can inform and engage each other.

The journal invites rigorous, scholarly investigation of and evidence-based critical reflections on topics related to all aspects of teaching and learning, including

  • designing effective learning environments
  • the educational affordances of technology
  • high-quality assessment and feedback,
  • curriculum design and other relevant practices.
