The Late Ming was a historical period when friendship was celebrated with unprecedented enthusiasm. However, such celebration also helped intensify the long-standing conflicts between friendship and other human relationships as defined in the Confucian notion of wulun or “the five cardinal human relationships." This essay is a reading of several stories focusing on friendship by Feng Menglong to explore some of the implications of the ambivalence toward friendship shared among many literati at that time.
