晉代名德僧肇《涅槃無名論》之真僞問題,是魏晉南北朝佛教史的一個著名學術公案,至今未有定論。被選入《文選》卷五十九的王巾《頭陀寺碑文》駢儷用典,歷來被當作佛教駢文的典範。碑文中大量引證僧肇《涅槃無名論》之語句,初唐李善對此已有標注,加上高步瀛和筆者所發掘者,計達二十五條,其中只有一條不見於《涅槃無名論》。由此可見《涅槃無名論》流行於東晉南朝,其絶大部分内容應是可信的。

The Treatise on Nirvana by the Jin monk Seng Zhao is an important paper in the Buddhist history of Wei, Jin, Southern and Northern dynasties, however, whether it is a pseudograph remains disputed. As an example of Buddhist parallel prose, Wang Chin’s “Dhuta Temple Stele Inscription” was included in the famous anthology Wen Xuan. As the early Tang scholar Li Shan noted, it alludes to The Treatise on Nirvana in 25 places, only of which cannot be located in the extant version of the treatise. The treatise is very popular in the Southern dynasties, and most of the extant version is authentic.
