醫療的目的是為了挽數人的性命，為人提供健康的生命，自殺與醫療的目的背道而馳，因此無論中西醫學都反對人自殺；然而，在中國哲學佔有主流地位的儒家，卻歌頌那些為了追求至善而自殺的人。
