本章的標題包括了對於威廉．詹姆斯（James ）著名的論斷的暗示，即要證明所有的烏鴉不都是黑的，只需要一隻白色的烏鴉。這個論斷是針對那個拒斥超常知覺的教條而作出的。這個正統的教條是“任何人的智能中沒有任何內容不是來自於平常感知的經驗的”。詹姆斯論斷的要點在於，要破壞這個信仰，我們只需要一個反例。
