當代中國生命倫理學面臨三大困境和挑戰：一是中國倫理學的總體理論議題，即當代中國人應該如何反思自身文化身份和整合倫理價值，並在此基礎上與西方倫理學對話；二是生命倫理學的具體理論議題，即傳統倫理學如何面對由於現代科學技術所產生的新問題；三是當代中國生命倫理學的實踐議題，即生命倫理學如何引導當局實踐“中國醫藥衞生體制改革”以解決目前諸多問題，並制定與之相關的政府政策。本期所刊登的六篇文章皆與上述三大困境和挑戰相關，其中五篇曾於今年暑期，在香港浸會大學應用倫理學研究中心舉辦的第六屆“建構中國生命倫理學”研討會上宣讀。研討會上，論文作者與來自美國萊斯大學(Rice University)的恩格爾哈特教授(H. Tristram Engelhardt, Jr.)就生命倫理學的一些具體問題進行了深入交流和爭論，特別是如何理解在中國文化的語境中探討當代生命倫理學與醫療科技的關係。
